RE: wheel bearings

Check for EZ lube hubs if they are Dexters, you can sometimes lube them from the outside - still never hurts to pull the hubs and check.
My book says annually I believe.

RE: Please Turn Down The Television!

If you HAVE to watch TV while camping, turn it down! I can go home and listen to my neighbors playing loud music and watching TV outside. We go camping to relax and have some peace and quiet.
Not me... see I live in the sticks of West Virginny where it is always quiet. I go camping to hear dogs barking, kids screaming, TVs blaring and radio's blasting. It relaxes me. I can go home and listen to quiet. :B

RE: Small trailer question - Do you take turns?

I thought it would be fun.... but then you probably have a walk around bed?
We do now, but we didn't for years in the tent(bed towards one wall, suitcases/clothes on the other side) or in the pop-up.
And you are right - it will be fun to read these :)

RE: Small trailer question - Do you take turns?

So hard to avoid making jokes on this one, but we tend to sleep in the same order that we sleep at home. If we are both lying on our backs, my wife is always to my left. This was true in our tent and pop-up days as well.
With a 3 year old alarm clock, we tend to get up together EVERY morning :B

RE: Decisions,Decisions?? Help!!

Financially speaking, you are usually better off buying the used one, especially if you are a little bit handy yourself in the event of small problems.
BUT, you do need to look it over carefully and trust your own judgment on its condition.
If you are willing able to go to RVW fo ryour coach, you can start out much farther ahead on being upside down on the new one, and new is certainly always nice.
Assuming your Tow vehicle is adequate (and I don't know enough to say whether it is or isn't) I don't know that I would worry to much about the extra few feet. Now 35' I would think is a big difference, but adding a few feet probably wouldn't make a huge difference to you over time. The fact that you recognize the extra size with respect indicates that you are thoughtful - a good characteristic for adjusting to something new!
The good news is, you are hunting! And then you will be camping! Good luck with your decision.

RE: Backing in somebody else's rig

The question used to be..only..."What would Jesus do?"
Lets face it, he does not know how to back-up a TT either.
Why not leave religion out of it as it has absolutely no connection with RVing whatsoever.
Neither does sacrilegiousness. And the "He" should be capitalized.
I think the point of the post was simply that the OP did the right thing, by treating others the way he would want to be treated, and the way Christianity teaches us to act.

RE: Keeping Kids In the TT

I don't know if the "rod" is quite right for 18 months,
Something like THIS
I'm sorry but if the little bugger is smart enough to figure out how to open the door....
He should be old enough to understand the word..
-------------NO!----------
I agree 100% - but the problem is not with understanding at this age, it is willfullness. Do you want to TRUST him to listen when you are at the back of the trailer getting something and he decides that at that one moment he isn't going to listen? You can spank a child until the cows come home, and then as soon as you go to the back of the camper he will eventually try it again. A $3 latch is better than a trip to the hospital. I prefer to save breaking an 18-month-old toddler's willfullness for when it will not jeopardize their safety.
I don't want to hijack this thread into a debate about parenting. I can assure you that as a teacher and the son of a former Marine I believe in discipline. :W
those flat latches wouldn't work for mine the screen is not flush to the wall of the inside of the TT. I could prbly rig a spacer but just seems way ghetto! ;)
Perhaps a chain style then like THIS The chain might allow it to open a tiny bit depnding on the spacing, but not far enough for the little one to take a header. Mounting it vertically will reduce the distance the door will open when chained.

RE: Keeping Kids In the TT

Ours is 3 and this is going to be our year - last year he just wasn't able to really push open the outside door. He listens fairly well now, but I have already contemplated a solution for us if we end up needing it.
I don't know if the "rod" is quite right for 18 months, so I would suggest a worst case scenario of buying a small latch similar to a deadbolt style and placing it up high. Using a small one would allow very minimum screw holes.
Screwing it into the door/camper isn't the easiest pill to swallow, but it is better than trips to the emergency room.

GCWR for my truck

I don't currently have access to my truck (or manual), and have forgotten ---
What is the GCWR on an 06 GMC 1500 SLE1 Sierra Crew Cab 4x4 with a 5.3L 3.42 rear?
Figured it would be quicker to ask - couldn't find it on a quick net search.
I am thinking it was around 12K-13K.
Thanks.

RE: Where are we all gonna sleep?

Perhaps one could sleep sitting on the throne? I had a college roommate that was famous for this one time after a night of revelry :)
Seriously though, I wouldn't mind sleeping in the TV if needed. Chances are you are going to spend most of your time outside anyway, and the thought of having a little privacy for my sleep cycle would sound good to me.
Tell you what... I have never been to Yellowstone before, and it is DEFINITELY on my list, so I will volunteer to go with you, sleep in the TV, and let you know how it is! :B

RE: 1000 Trails, my worst camping mistake!

The biggest advantage for members from what I can tell is the fact that you can stay for free - so you don't have to worry about setting money aside for the site each time you go in the monthly budget. I imagine there is a certain number of nights per year that you need to camp to get your money's worth. Not knowing the real costs of these memberships I can't do the math to find out though.
I have to admit it sounds cool - but we are the type that likes to travel to different areas, so I have already found plenty of places where we have taken trips that there are no TT/OW campgrounds close to the destinations we are striving for.
I don't think there is a universal answer on this one. Each must weigh their own advantages/disadvantages, based on their needs, budget and camping styles.

RE: Jellyfish Stings

I know last summer they were stocking the lifeguard chairs with White Vinegar at New Symrna Beach in Fla. Guy from work got nailed multiple times, also had to go get Tetanus shot at ER due to water borne bacteria. Not sure if White Vinegar works on Texas Jellyfish, maybe only works on Fla. Jellyfish :@
Must work out West too - I remember watching a reality show called Beach Patrol, which took place in San Diego, and they were also using a spray bottle of vinegar mixture for treating stings.
But jomasw's idea sounds like an easy way to handle it too.

RE: Backing in somebody else's rig

So, then how does one learn?
For me, a high school parking lot on a Saturday -- actually MANY Saturdays.
Not suprisingly, it is the same way my Dad taught me to drive on snow/ice. Get out into an empty parking lot after a storm and spin the car around a bit to feel how to handle it when it does break traction.

I guess I'm more cynical than most..
It's not that I lack cynicism. It's just that at this point you can either feel good or feel bitter. Why waste time feeling bitter? Life is too short. I might feel peeved at first, but I just wouldn't dwell on it.

RE: New TV issues with Wind and TT

One other question. the hitch has 2 holes for tongue weight 1 for 1000 and one for 1200#. which one am I supposed to be using? Does it matter? Just noticed it this weekend when removing it.
The hole marked 1200#, when used, will keep more of the hitch in the receiver, allowing less leverage on the twisting motion of the hitch. I always use the 1200# hole even though my tongue weight is no where near that. The only reason I know to use the other hole is to gain clearance between the TV and the TT for tighter turns, but I have never found it necessary.

According to Antigua's website for the 2008 version:
CLICKABLE LINK
GVWR 5000 lbs.
Dry 3681 lbs.
Hitch 490 lbs.
Overall length when closed 22'5" ball to bumper
Not sure how different it would be for a 2006.

RE: Jellyfish Stings

We have used meat tenderizer in the past and it works really well. Also a lot easier to deal with than the option listed above. Sprinkle some in the palm of your hand and apply a little water to make a paste. Place it directly on the sting and it will draw poison and sting out.
Then marinate the sting area in Italian dressing for 12 hours and cook over a medium flame until only slightly pink inside. Garnish with leafy greens and a nice Chianti - DELICIOUS!
